The church, built with bitter toil, is now stolen away; it is in the possession of that very Merciless One and of his deceived. Should we seek our right before worldly courts? One knows how it goes. Who does not know how much peace and godliness there is in lawsuits? We have been strongly advised against it. We must therefore let our property go, and resign ourselves to the loss, though with great grief and sadness. Smitten and ill-used sheep go silently away, without thinking on revenge.

But what shall we do? We have a double calling: first, to care for our own souls; then, to win back unto salvation the members scattered hither and thither: for this we need a place of assembly, if possible one where the wanderers dare to gather again. But the whole flock, so far as it is gathered, still trembles itself. It does not know whether it has really escaped the wolf or not. The enemy has succeeded in pouring an insuperable distrust into its soul. Ah, what must a shepherd's heart feel at this, which means it faithfully and honestly! Moreover, the people are, for the most part, wholly without means. A church building is not to be thought of; for that more courage and cheerfulness are required than is yet left from this misfortune. If anything is to be done, it must be done quickly, that hearts may begin again to draw breath. If the breath does not soon return, if it is not blown into the breast with some force, it will remain away forever, as is to be feared.

Yet God, the Merciful, who Himself takes charge of His sheep, has already provided counsel. We cannot build; therefore He gives us a wonderful opportunity to buy an old little frame church. So quick help would now be there, — and our hope is that the LORD will now also turn the hearts of our brethren, and that they will reach us a compassionate hand. In this hope we have ventured it. We have also bought a little ground for it, to set our church upon, which would be useless to us at its present place. But we cannot pay for it and keep it if we are left alone. Yet we know and believe confidently that we shall not be left alone. Our humble and brotherly request, to remember us for Christ's sake, will not be in vain. There is indeed hope that the LORD will open to us here a great door, and that at another time we may repay love with love.

Church News.

On the Sunday after the holy Christmas-day, that is, on the 29th of December of last year, the Rev. Pastor Erhardt Riedel from Franconia, until now a pupil of the Theol. Seminary at Fort Wayne, having received a regular call from the Luth. St. Thomas Congregation in Harrison in Tully Township, Van Wert Co., Ohio, was ordained in the midst of his congregation by the Rev. Dr. Sihler, with the assistance of the Rev. P. Streckfuß.

Request.

As early as the year 1848 a number of copies of "Hunius Inhalt der christlichen Lehre" arrived here from Fort Wayne through an opportunity, yet not to me, for whom they were intended, but were delivered elsewhere. My inquiries and endeavors to come into possession of these books have been in vain until now. I therefore request those into whose hands copies of this book may have come, perhaps during the Synod held here in the same year, kindly to inform me thereof.

St. Louis, 9th Jan. 1851.

F. W. Barthel.

For the kind return of any surplus copies of Nos. 1—5 and 9 of Jahrgang 6 of the "Lutheraner" earnestly begs
