Ministerial Sitzungen.

Kand.

W. John, St. Peters P. O., Franklin Co. Ind. F. Th. Jungck, Troy, Perry Co., Ind. Mayer, Madison, Ind. Polack, Cincinnati, care of Rev. Th. Wichmann.

Was war, du meine Narde, dir?
Was ach, für Süßigkeiten!
Der König wandte sich her zu mir.
Mit seinen Herrlichkeiten.

Da sich der König wandte her
Mit seinen Herrlichkeiten
Da duftete die Narde sehr
Als wäre sie voll Freuden.

Mein ganzes Herz zerschmelz in mir.
Ach Wonne im Gemüthe!
O Narde, du zerbrichst mir schier
Vor wundersüßer Blüthe.

Mein Freund ist wie ein Büschel zart
Von Myrrhe mir am Herzen.
Von süß und bitrer Wunderart
Voll Leid ist er und Schmerzen.

Ministerial Sessions.

The Ministerium held several sessions, in which it occupied itself with the examination of the testimonials, diaries, biographies and prepared sermons of the applicants and candidates.

The following applicants, namely, had presented themselves.

Mr. Cyriakus Mayer, born the 3rd of Nov. 1805.
" W. Gust. Polack, " 30th Apr. 1825.
" Fr. W. Breitfeld, " 23rd Apr. 1808.

Mr. C. Mayer was trained as a teacher by the Preceptor Pfleiderer in Blaubeuren, Württemberg, was later a teacher at his Latin school and studied theology privately. From an apology of Christianity, in short sentences, composed by himself and presented by him, the Ministerium gains a good confidence in him and recognizes his theological attainments.

Mr. Gustav W. Polack studied for several years in the Mission Seminary at Berlin under the Inspector Blech, P. Stolee, also P. Schüttge, and satisfies the Ministerium by the testimonials presented concerning his qualification for the preaching office. The sermons written by him confirmed the judgment.

Concerning Mr. F. W. Breitfeld it is to be remarked that he served as a teacher in Germany and that the testimonial presented speaks only for him. The Ministerium indeed has besides this one sermon written by him in hand, but from all this can as yet give no judgment on his theological attainments. Since Mr. Breitfeld again withdrew on account of family affairs before the examination of the applicants, it was resolved:

that the Examining and Ordination Committee be charged to betake itself to the congregation of Mr. Breitfeld, in order

1. to inquire into his moral conduct, since several things against his person have come to the ears of the Ministerium.

2. to examine him, and if he passes the examination, and nothing else stands against him, to ordain him.

The above applicants, Messrs. Mayer and Polack, and the hitherto candidates W. John and Th. Jungck, were publicly examined on the 6th and 7th of September upon the subjects appointed by the Synod, and on their account it was resolved to consecrate them by ordination to the holy office which preaches reconciliation.

Concerning Mr. Cand. Lasar it was resolved that, since it does not appear from the testimonials submitted by his congregations upon what churchly standpoint these stand, Pastors Wichmann, John and Jungck are charged to betake themselves to the congregations of Mr. Lasar, in order to ascertain their standpoint, and, if nothing stands in the way, to ordain Mr. Cand. Lasar.

On the 8th of September in the evening, as resolved, the brethren Jungck, John, Mayer and Polack were ordained publicly before the assembled congregation, after having made the pledge to all the symbolical books of the Evang. Lutheran Church, by laying on of hands and with the customary solemnities, as servants of the Evang. Lutheran Church.

May the dear LORD grant that these brethren with all earnestness and zeal labor to this end, that through them also the One holy Church be built up, and that their congregations, which are entrusted to them, be edified and brought to the living consciousness that it is the Lutheran Church which teaches God's Word pure and clear and rightly administers the Sacraments. May they take to heart what Paul writes to his dear Timothy in the first Epistle, chap. 4, 16: Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee. The Lord enlighten, strengthen and preserve them by His Holy Spirit. Amen.

The brethren John, Jungck, Mayer and Polack and Mr. Dieckmann, deputy of the Luth. Trinity Congregation in Cincinnati, signed the Constitution.

During the session there was preaching daily. On Saturday there was confession and on Sunday the celebration of the Holy Supper.

The order and texts of the sermons was as follows.

On the 4th of Sept. evening P. Mayer on Malachi 3, 1-4.
On the 5th evening P. John on Matth. 16, 24-28.
On the 6th evening P. Jungck on Mark 1, 15.
On the 7th evening confessional address by P. Meißner on James 4, 8-10
On the 8th communion sermon by P. Isensee on Matth. 26, 26-29.
In the afternoon P. Brand on Gospel of John 5, 39.
In the evening ordination sermon by P. Wichmann on Colossians 4, 17.

May the dear Lord acknowledge this His Word, not let it return void, but accomplish that whereunto He has sent it.

It is further to be remarked that the Synod on Monday still resolved that the President is charged to name to each preacher, for the next session, a subject, at least 4 weeks before the assembling of the Synod, upon which he shall work out a sermon and deliver it before the Synod.

Changed and new Post-Offices of the brethren are:

P. Meißner. Cannot yet be given. W. John, St. Peters P. O., Franklin Co. Ind. F. Th. Jungck, Troy, Perry Co., Ind. Mayer, Madison, Ind. Polack, Cincinnati, care of Rev. Th. Wichmann.

The body at present consists of 16 ordained pastors, who serve 21 congregations. Pastors Meißner and Hartmann at present have no congregations. In the past year the following official acts have occurred: 196 baptisms, 31 confirmands, 1417 communicants, 69 marriages, 80 burials. In their district there are: 10 Sunday schools, 11 parish schools.

That the foregoing is as faithful an extract as possible from the proceedings of the fifth session of the Evang. Luther. Synod of Indianopolis is certified by

Th. Wichmann,
Secretary.

Pastor Ed. Leemhuis asks the members of our Synod to solicit, in their congregations, a collection for the new building of a church undertaken by his Lutheran congregation in Lafayette. The congregation consists of poor members and has as yet no church building of its own. His address is, as known, Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co., Ind.

From the Song of Songs.

What ailed thee, O my spikenard, tell?
What, ah, what sweetnesses!
The King turned hither unto me
With his glories.

When the King turned hither
With his glories
Then the spikenard gave forth fragrance
As though it were full of joys.

My whole heart melteth within me.
Ah, rapture in my soul!
O spikenard, thou breakest me nearly
With wondrous-sweet blossom.

My friend is as a bundle fair
Of myrrh to me upon my heart.
Of sweet and bitter wondrous kind,
Full of grief is he and pains.
