Notice.

With God's help the fifth number of the Ev. Luth. Martyrology is now also completed and has just been sent to the honored subscribers. It contains the Italian martyrs Giovanni Mollio Montalcino, Faventino Famino, and the massacre of Montalto. The late appearance of this number has its cause in this, that the privilege obtained for this book did not arrive sooner, for which reason one begs kind indulgence.

It has already been made known that, God willing, a second volume of the Ev. Lutheran Martyrology will appear on the same terms as the first. All who wish to subscribe to it are requested to do so as soon as possible, so that the size of the edition may be determined accordingly.

Letters are requested, postage paid, at the address:

Rev. H. Fick,
Bremen, near St. Louis, Mo.

Church News.

The following dear brethren, after having been duly called by the congregations concerned, have been, in the midst of the same, partly ordained, partly installed:

1.) Mr. Leonhardt Daib, from Württemberg, until now a pupil of the Seminary at Fort Wayne, called by the German Evangelical Lutheran congregation on Cicero Creek in Jackson Township, Hamilton Co., Ia., ordained at my commission on the Wednesday after Easter (the 19th of April) by P. Fricke of Indianapolis, with the assistance of the two P. P. Kunz and Schürmann.

2.) Mr. Friedrich Dietz from Middle Franconia, likewise until then a pupil of the Seminary here, called by the German Evangelical Lutheran congregation of the Holy Trinity Church, near Fort Wayne, Allen County, Ind., ordained by me with the assistance of P. Föhlinger on the 1st Friday after Easter (the 23rd of April.)

3.) Mr. Heinrich Jüngel from Hesse-Darmstadt, likewise until now a pupil of the Seminary here, called by the German Evangelical Lutheran congregation in and near Peru, Miami Co., Ind., ordained by P. Stürcken of Logansport on the 1st Friday after Easter (the 23rd of April.)

4.) Mr. P. Friedr. Schumann, until then pastor of that congregation on Cicero Creek, and called away by the German Evangelical Lutheran Immanuel's Congregation in Noble Co., Ind., and dismissed by his former one in peace and with wishes of blessing, installed by Prof. P. Crämer with the assistance of P. Wambsgans on the 1st Friday after Easter (the 23rd of April.)

May the gracious and merciful God bless these dear brethren richly also, that they may bring forth much fruit, and that their fruit may abide unto everlasting life, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.

W. Sihler, P.

Fort Wayne, the 25th of April, 1854.

Betbuch

of Christian the First, Duke and Elector of Saxony, of the year 1589.

This precious prayer book, newly edited by Dr. Irmischer, has lately appeared from the publishing house of Mr. Andreas Deichert in Erlangen. It is 312 pages strong in small octavo format and costs in Germany only 6 Neugroschen. The book was not, as it seems, composed by the Elector named on the title, but was merely put together at his wish from existing prayers. After 38 daily morning and evening blessings follow 65 prayers taken from the Bible, then 42 prayers for particular estates according to the Table of Duties of the Catechism; thereupon 86 petitions for every need of all Christendom, together with thanksgivings for all benefits, according to the chief parts of the Catechism; a threefold exposition of the Lord's Prayer, and finally a Passion history after the four Evangelists, with a general Passion prayer. The prayers have the special merit that they are as instructive as they are full of unction. Where the need of a good prayer book in a family shows itself, it can hardly be better supplied than by this beautiful, substantial and yet so cheap "Betbuch."
