In the modern languages, namely in French, Spanish and Italian, in drawing (architectural included) and in music, private instruction is given.

With regard to the subjects listed in the plan of instruction, it may well not be superfluous to remark, should the variety of them on the one hand perhaps strike anyone, that it is by no means in the plan of the institution to overburden the mental powers of the pupils, and that in many cases it suffices for a complete education to know of a science only the chief principles and the most important results, for which neither excessive time nor exertion is required; and should on the other hand some subject perhaps be missed, that it is equally the aim of the institution to give a comprehensive education, and that such a subject, if it really appears essential, receives consideration in connection with other sciences expressly named.

It is our intention to make use likewise of the newest and best textbooks which are in use in the Gymnasia of Germany, and through a bookseller in New York connected with the Synod these are obtained in the shortest possible time and at the lowest possible prices, and are to be had there as well as here at the institution. A list of them together with the prices attached shall be furnished later.

Other aids of the institution in instruction are at present still small, yet it possesses a library which is continually being increased, and has the use of a geological, mineral, plant and conchological collection. The remaining necessary apparatus
