Er fahr denn an mir als ein Wicht;
Die Kirch ich pflanz auf ihren Zweig,
In keinem Weg die Wahrheit schweig.

Treff's Pabst, Bischöf, Prälaten an,
So bleibt doch Gott's Wort ewig stahn,
Zu Gut der gmeinen Christenheit;
Das red' ich bei meiner Seligkeit.

Melodien-Bücher sind wieder fertig geworden.

mus toward the Papacy belong, furthermore, such utterances as Mr. S. makes with his learned unionistic brethren in the faith, when, namely, "popes such as Nicholas Hildebrand (Gregory 7.) and Innocent 3., whom one formerly regarded as hardly anything better than devils incarnate, would now be looked upon as heroes and benefactors of mankind."

Be it granted, namely, that these popes were in moral respect, for example, far above an Alexander 6., a Julius 2., and others of the later time — be it granted that they, rising above petty personal interests and passions, pursued with unshaken perseverance and enduring strength of will and force of character their far-reaching plans and designs for the actual or supposed good of the Roman Church; — yes, be it granted also that Gregory, for example, was a serious and decided Christian before his ascent of the papal chair: — still it was hardly to be expected otherwise than that afterwards, when as pope Satan had drawn about him his magic circle of spiritual world-dominion, Church and Papacy should coincide for him, and that he, in unevangelical blindness, should seek and find the prosperity of the Church in the glorification of the Papacy. —

So there vanishes, probably, before the admiration of Gregory's force of character, with which he laid low the abomination of simony (the purchase of spiritual offices) and withstood the Emperor Henry 4., who was indeed also violent and overreaching, from the eye of broad-hearted Unionists the great trifle in this "hero and benefactor of mankind," that he declares what St. Paul calls a doctrine of devils, namely the forbidding to marry (1 Tim. 4:3), to be holy and right, in the true papistic way, in that by his mandate of power he enforces celibacy (the unmarried state of the priests) and thereby opens a source of unspeakable abominations, while he obtains thereby, after all, only hierarchical advantages by this act of violence.

In sum, the learned and unlearned gentlemen Unionists may, in their haze and hovering, and in the feeble humanitarianism of our days, for the sake of this or that humanly heroic pope, display ever so friendly an inclination toward the Papacy: — yet these so-called Evangelicals, unless they have little respect for the Gospel, will hardly furnish the proof that the Papacy has no root contrary to Scripture, anti-evangelical, and has proceeded from God's good and gracious will. But if Professor Schaff is in a position to furnish this proof, and, as an evangelical professor of the evangelical Church, to justify the Papacy evangelically, according to its origin and nature, that is, to prove its well-pleasingness to God from the Gospel: then I will gladly be the most bigoted and narrow-minded old-Lutheran, but then not remain so, and will gladly be converted to the evangelical Papacy of Prof. S.

Inscription beneath a Portrait of Luther.

Beneath a portrait of Luther of the year 1520 Ulrich von Hutten placed the following rhymes:

Luther I am called, that is true,
For my doctrine is pure and clear,
Flows from the words of Christ plainly,
From St. Paul's and other servants of God.

No man can condemn me,
Unless he assail me as a wretch;
The Church I plant upon her branch,
In no wise will I keep silent the truth.

Strike at pope, bishops, prelates,
God's Word yet abides forever,
For the good of common Christendom;
That I say by my salvation.

Hymn-tune Books are ready again.

With hearty thanks the following gifts for the St. John's Church in Philadelphia are acknowledged:
