Ein alter Haushahn hielt auf einer Scheune Wache;
Da kommt ein Fuchs mit schnellem Schritt,
Und ruft: O krähe, Freund, nun ich dich fröhlich mache;
Wie guckst du so herum? — „Greif, Halt und Bellart kommen,
Die Hunde, die du kennst“, versetzt der alte Hahn;

Was sie verheißen, ist hienieden nicht zu finden;

you, is it possible that your memory is so weak? — Did I not speak of your hypocrisy, falsehood, contempt and disdain of the brethren and the synod? Did you not answer thereto: I ought to have stated everything? Did I not say: I would let you be what you are, and would find no pleasure in communicating this publicly, etc.? Yes, you said, then I ought only not to have spared Kunz, etc. But I will be brief, for I see that you show public repentance over one point, which is very welcome to me; so then, in the name of JEsus, if you stand in true faith, I will not withhold the public absolution: In the name of God, the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. J. F. Isensee.

Pennsylvania Correspondence.

We cannot refrain from communicating to our dear readers a private report which we received a short time ago from Pennsylvania from a brother in office who became known to us only through this written communication. He writes, namely, among other things the following:

"The 'Lutheraner,' with its purely orthodox confessional expressions of the true and right-believing Evangelical Lutheran Church, strikes the New-Measure men in this region (the adherents of the anti-Lutheran Pittsburg Synod) mightily on the head, in true 'old-Lutheran' style, so that the church feud between the Ohio Synod and the Pittsburg Synod, which has already existed for some time and has risen to the highest pitch even among native-born American-German farmers, becomes the longer the more decided; and it is to be hoped that in West Pennsylvania, after a long night, the blessed dawn of the pure truth will at last arise in the Lutheran church-heaven, to the honor of God and to the salvation of immortal souls, who also are redeemed with God's blood and born again through holy baptism of water and the Spirit. May the 'Lutheraner' deal the New-Measure men one death-blow after another and not grow weaker in its polemics, but ever more confidently defend the truth and purity of doctrine and expose the error and deceit of the devil; then there is no doubt that by the blessing of God a rich harvest will follow a good sowing, so that also in †† County, where the New-Measure men have already taken possession of most of the church buildings, the kingdom of Satan may be shattered and the pure Lutheran flag may wave over its ruins."

The Messenger of Peace.

An Old Fable with a New Moral.

An old rooster was keeping watch upon a barn;
There comes a fox with swift stride,
And cries: O crow, friend, now that I make thee glad;
I bring good tidings with me.
The beasts' war is at an end, men are weary of discord,
In our realm there is quiet and peace.
I myself bring it to thee from all the foxes,
O friend, come down soon, that I may embrace thee. . .
Why dost thou peer about so? — "Greif, Halt, and Bellart are coming,
The dogs which thou knowest," replies the old rooster;
And, as the fox runs off: "What," says he, "ails thee?"
Nothing, brother, says the fox; the strife is ended:
Only, I doubt still whether they have yet heard of it.

Moral:

Trust not, friend, the peace which foxes proclaim to thee,
They cry: Peace! only for their belly.
What they promise is not to be found down here;
So fight on, that is the Christian's office and custom.

Luther, the German prophet, says here a great word, the sum of all his other words of combat and testimony concerning the most holy Sacrament: "The pope," he says (Table-Talk; Works, XXII, 998), "has indeed the thing, namely the oral Word of God, baptism, the Supper and absolution; but the use he has not. Again, the enthusiasts, who cannot bear that God is revealed in the flesh, for they will have only a spiritual God, boast much of usefulness and use, whereas use without the thing is a mere fiction." — Rudelbach, Kirchenspiegel, p. 532.

The German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio and Other States

will hold its sessions this year at St. Louis, Mo., from the 29th of May, being the second Wednesday after Pentecost, to the 8th of June inclusive. — The brethren who arrive are requested to betake themselves to the dwelling of Pastor F. Bünger, or if necessary to inquire for it of Mr. Hermann Bünger at his apothecary shop, Franklin Avenue, between 8th and 9th Streets.

F. W. Husmann,
for the time Secretary of the Synod.
