Amen.
Fort Wayne am 12. Januar 1854.

through the mouth and word of a man who is in an orderly office. But if it should happen that a citizen or two should ask me to preach, I ought not to follow such a call and command. For thereby one makes room and opens to Satan's apostles and servants also an entrance, so that after this example they afterwards also do harm; as has been said above. But if I am asked by those who are in a public office or government, then I should do it." (Ibid. p. 1578, 79.)
The third passage is: "Therefore, since the appointed bishops persecute the Gospel and refuse to ordain capable persons, every church has in this case good right and title to ordain church servants for itself."*) (Smalcald Articles, Of the Power and Jurisdiction of Bishops, fol. 157.)
*) Further below it says moreover: "Whether one would now call this a disorder or division, one should know that the godless doctrine and tyranny of the bishops is to blame for it, for so Paul commands that all bishops who either themselves teach wrongly or defend wrong doctrine and false worship shall be held as culpable persons." (fol. 157, 158.)

In now finally thanking the dear brethren (pastors and congregations) heartily for the above assistance, I cannot refrain from rendering the same thanks at once to Mrs. Professor Crämer; and precisely because she, as one of the quiet in the land, in her unassuming labor of love is far from desiring any recognition, it matters to me all the more to express it here publicly; for particularly through her housewifely thrift and faithful management of the household at the Seminary it has come about that that part of the above contributions which was given to the Seminary in provisions, worth about 200 dollars, has been so economically used that each of the pupils had to pay only 20 dollars for the yearly maintenance in board—lodging and fuel they have besides free, likewise washing through individual families of my congregation—out of which, moreover, the maid's wages were still defrayed.
Likewise I heartily thank the dear families of my congregation, who this year also supplied our young friends with clean linen, and no less the Ladies' Society of the congregation, which provided not only the mending of the linen and the clothes, but in part also new linen, summer clothes and bedding, and also supported with traveling money individual students sent out into the service of the Church.
Finally, we—my colleague, Prof. Crämer, and I—had this year also hearty joy in the willingness of our pupils, seminarians and preparandi, with which they undertook the manifold house, garden and field work, which was so divided among them, 25 in number, that we had no need to keep a hired man, and thereby also a lesser contribution to the household fund was brought about for them.
But as joy is commonly mixed with sorrow, so the latter has not failed us in this, that we had, to our regret, to observe how there have been congregations, and moreover members of our Synodical Union, who in the course of this year contributed nothing toward the maintenance of our institutions of learning in St. Louis or here, which is yet their duty and obligation, precisely as members of our Synodical body, and is by no means left merely to their free love. May such congregations, also stirred up by the praiseworthy and lovely example of many a sister congregation, do more diligently for this year, make up what has been neglected, and perhaps at the 3 great festivals and once in Trinity season raise collections among themselves for this purpose; then it would also become easier for the poorer students to procure good books for themselves already during their course of study, for which later they sometimes have still less money.
And so may the faithful God bless us further and prosper the work of our hands for Christ's sake. Amen.
