service in bodily and spiritual distress, which may be cultivated and ordered by clergy and members of the congregation on the basis of the church's confession within every congregation. But the organization of such societies under the direction of a central board, with disregard of the confession and of congregational boundaries, the Conference must decidedly disapprove.

4) The Conference declares that, with respect to the common schools, it must be thoroughly demanded and insisted upon that not only the religious instruction be given in accordance with the confession of the congregation, but also that care be taken that all the instruction and the training be not in contradiction with this confession.

5) The Conference declares the thought, conceived at Wittenberg, of a confederation to be brought about among churches of different confessions, as such, to be impracticable and incompatible with the principles of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

6) The territorial princely church government may no longer, under the present relations of the State to the Church, continue in the former manner, but may, according to circumstances, well continue under such modifications as guarantee the independence and freedom of the Church.

7) The Conference desires the independence and autonomy of the clerical teaching office; that is, it desires that this be bound only by the church's confession of the Gospel and the order of the Church corresponding thereto. It rejects, with respect to doctrine and discipline, every dependence of the teaching office, whether upon princely decrees, or "upon congregational resolutions which should be obtained by any majority of votes whatever, not bound by the church's confession," or finally upon any board of the congregation whatever that would impair the spiritual office and its powers. But the Conference no less desires a well-articulated organization of congregational representation, and regards this as the fundamental condition for every reconstruction of the Church with regard to its constitution.

8) The formal organization of the church fellowships extending beyond the individual territorial boundaries the Conference regards as a goal to be striven for, but believes that here one must pursue the LORD's further ways with great earnestness, instead of wishing to make them according to one's own liking.

Mr. Suhr's Excessive Humility in Cincinnati.

In the 45th and 48th numbers of the "Protestantische Zeitblätter," Mr. Suhr pours out, in truly touching expressions, his very lamentations over the fact that Dr. Sihler, as is to be seen from an essay in the "Lutheraner," does not wish, as a preacher of Christ, to be "a cattle-herd or hireling," and therefore "boasts, with the most disparaging mien and the most impudent mouth, against those who do not think higher of themselves than it becomes them to think." We must confess that we had not expected so unexampled a humility, putting thousands of preachers to shame, in Mr. Suhr. To be sure, he seems, in the very essay which contains this humble confession, to wish purposely to leave it unconcealed that he himself has not yet crossed the threshold of all human sciences, has not yet applied himself to logic,*) namely, since the good man in fact admits that he cannot separate the different notions lying in the word "accidental." However, as well as modesty becomes Mr. Suhr in this respect, he nevertheless plainly goes too far in this, when he thinks he must put himself on a level even with cattle-herds; for although the office of a cattle-herd is a thoroughly honorable one, yet those also whose spirit Mr. Suhr feeds with his teaching will just as little wish him to be regarded as a cattle-herd, as Dr. Sihler's Christian hearers do him.

*) This is indeed most strange, since logic is the science of the laws of thought, and Mr. Suhr is a collaborator on a paper which is published for the benefit and profit of the "Thought-believers."

The True God Is Not Known unto Salvation by Speculation.

When a bishop was about to be led to martyrdom, his judge put this question to him besides: What kind of God the God of the Christians was? The former answered: "You will know Him when you are worthy." Euseb. hist. eccl. L. V.

Church Notice.

After the candidate of the holy ministry, Mr. Johannes Rennicke of Courland, who received his theological training in the preachers' seminary at Fort Wayne, had been regularly called by the Evangelical Lutheran congregations in St. Clair County and at Columbia, Illinois, as successor to the beloved Pastor Schieferdecker, he was on Dom. Oculi, the 3rd of February of this year, by order of the presidium of our Synod, through P. Bünger, with the assistance of P. Wunder, in the Church of the Holy Cross of the congregation in St. Clair Co., after apostolic usage, by the laying on of hands and prayer, publicly and solemnly ordained and installed in his office. May the LORD give this new laborer grace to continue faithfully to build upon the foundation already wisely laid there.
