(Nördlinger Sonntagsblatt.)

Das Abendmahl.

Knieet hin vor Gottes Throne,
Beuget euch vor Gott dem Sohne,
Betet an den Herrn der Welt;
Der uns ruft mit süßen Worten,
Uns aufschließt des Himmels Pforten,
Und sein Abendmahl jetzt hält.

O unendliches Erbarmen,
Das mit offnen Liebesarmen
Unsre Seelen hold umfängt;
Und mit diesen äußern Zeichen,
Himmelsschätze ohne Gleichen,
Christi Leib und Blut uns schenkt.

Ueber alles, was wir sehen,
Ueber Bitten und Verstehen
Reichet Gottes Lieb' und Huld:
Du willst nicht bloß für uns leiden,
Bluten und am Kreuz verscheiden
Zur Versöhnung unsrer Schuld;

Nein, du willst mit unsren Seelen
Dich, o Jesu, selbst vermählen;
Darum trafst du diese Wahl:
Daß du deinen Leib uns schenkest,
Und mit deinem Blut uns tränkest,
In dem heil'gen Liebesmahl.

O du Abgrund ew'ger Güte,
Es begreift nicht mein Gemüthe,
Dieses wunderbare Pfand.
Wie sich mit dem Brod und Weine
Doch dein Leib und Blut vereine,
Uebersteiget den Verstand.

Aber weil du Herr gesprochen,
Du, der nie dein Wort gebrochen:
„Nehmt, das ist mein Leib, mein Blut;“
Darum laß ich's mir nicht rauben,
Hilf nur, daß in wahrem Glauben,
Ich empfah' dies heil'ge Gut.

Denn, wer sich so hoch vermisset,
Und unwürdig trinkt und isset,
Ißt und trinkt sich das Gericht;
Damit, daß er frevler Weise
Hierin von gemeiner Speise
Dein'n Leib unterscheidet nicht.

Drum durchwehn mich heil'ge Schauer,
Dazu füllt mich tiefe Trauer,
Daß ich, ach, ein Sünder bin;
Und mein' Schulden mich verdammen
Zu der Hölle Feuerflammen: —
Ach, mein Gott, wo soll ich hin?

Doch du willst mich nicht verschmähen,
Auch zu mir willst du eingehen,
Du barmherz'ge Liebe, du.
„Kommt, sprichst du mit treuen Blicken,
Sünder, ich will euch erquicken,
Daß ihr in mir findet Ruh.“

Nun betrübt' ich deine Liebe,
Wenn ich furchtsam ferne bliebe;
Drum so komm ich auf dein Wort.
Der den Schächer angenommen,
Der ist auch für mich gekommen,
Stößt auch mich nicht von sich fort.

So will ich getrost mich nahen,
Und das Heiligthum empfahen,
Wie mir Jesu Mund gered't.
Denn er kommt nicht, mich zu richten,
Und die Sünder zu vernichten,
In des Rächers Majestät.

Sieh, er kommt mir zu vergeben,
Und mir Seligkeit und Leben
Zu verleih'n mit seinem Leib;
Um mit diesen Himmelsgaben
Meine müde Seel' zu laben,
Daß ich ewig in ihm bleib.

Ach, so wollst du dich mir schenken,
Und mich ganz in Dir versenken,
Daß du lebst allein in mir.
So will ich die Brüder lieben,
Mich im Glauben treulich üben,
Und von Herzen dienen dir.

nor the sword to be feared on that account; at most, perhaps, a little scorn and derision of the wicked and unbelieving strikes us. We ought therefore to be so much the more zealous in Christianity. But alas, how sluggish Christendom has become, how worthless is God's Word among us, how negligent we are in attending to our souls' salvation, how little courage we have and show over against the world, and how would it go then, if over the Christian Church a time of persecution and a new baptism of blood should come! But let no one hold that impossible. What did the so-called Democrats aim at in the revolutionary years 1848 and 1849, and at what are their plans still directed? At nothing else than the overthrow of the Christian Church. And where they (even if only for a short time), by God's visitation, obtained the power, did they not fall upon the Christians first of all? — But do we know what is yet to come? One needs to be no prophet to see that great tribulations are impending, judgments which will bring it to a decision whether the candlestick of God shall still longer stand in its place among us, or be thrust out of it. Therefore let us, dear readers, consider in earnest how a Christian may prepare himself for such times and what may be incumbent upon him therein, that he may save his soul. Guidance thereto God gives us richly in His Word, especially in the 2nd and 3rd chapters of the Revelation of John. —

(Nördlinger Sonntagsblatt.)

The Lord's Supper.

Kneel before God's throne,
Bow before God the Son,
Worship the Lord of the world;
Who calls us with sweet words,
Unlocks for us the gates of heaven,
And now holds His Supper.

O infinite compassion,
Which with open arms of love
Graciously embraces our souls;
And with these outward signs,
Heavenly treasures without equal,
Gives us Christ's Body and Blood.

Above all that we see,
Above asking and understanding
Reaches God's love and favor:
Thou wilt not only suffer for us,
Bleed and on the cross expire
For the atonement of our guilt;

Nay, Thou wilt with our souls
Thyself, O Jesus, wed;
Therefore didst Thou make this choice:
That Thou give us Thy Body,
And with Thy Blood give us to drink,
In the holy love-feast.

O Thou abyss of eternal goodness,
My mind comprehends not
This wondrous pledge.
How with the bread and wine
Thy Body and Blood are yet united,
Surpasses understanding.

But because Thou, Lord, hast spoken,
Thou, who never hast broken Thy word:
"Take, this is my Body, my Blood;"
Therefore I will not let it be taken from me,
Only help that in true faith
I may receive this holy good.

For he who so highly presumes,
And drinks and eats unworthily,
Eats and drinks judgment to himself;
In that he, in presumptuous manner,
Herein from common food
Discerns not Thy Body.

Therefore holy awe thrills through me,
Moreover deep sorrow fills me,
That I, alas, am a sinner;
And my debts condemn me
To the fiery flames of hell: —
Ah, my God, whither shall I go?

Yet Thou wilt not despise me,
Even to me wilt Thou enter in,
Thou compassionate love, Thou.
"Come," sayest Thou with loving looks,
"Sinners, I will refresh you,
That ye may find rest in me."

Now I should grieve Thy love,
If I timidly remained afar;
Therefore I come upon Thy word.
He who received the thief,
He is also come for me,
Will not cast me also from Him.

So will I draw near with confidence,
And receive the Holy Thing,
As Jesus' mouth has spoken to me.
For He comes not to judge me,
And to destroy the sinners,
In the Avenger's majesty.

Behold, He comes to forgive me,
And to bestow upon me salvation and life
With His Body;
That with these heavenly gifts
He may refresh my weary soul,
That I may abide in Him forever.

Ah, so wilt Thou give Thyself to me,
And sink me wholly into Thee,
That Thou mayest live alone in me.
So will I love the brethren,
Exercise myself faithfully in faith,
And serve Thee from the heart.
