zens: "Dear brethren and citizens, tell one another what I now will say, for all cannot hear it. First we beg you that no one seek to avenge our death upon the papists in Cöln; further, that you say nothing else of us than what you have heard of us and shall hear from me. But hear what we believe." Here he recited the Creed and briefly expounded it. "In these articles the devil also believes, but he does not believe that they concern him and his salvation. But I believe steadfastly that all that is in them redounds to the good of my poor soul and of the souls of all believers."

In his great thirst Adolph had until then been refused a refreshing drink; now the executioner compassionately handed him the flask, and, strengthened thereby, he began anew: "We must now part from you. But when the Judge comes, who shall separate us all to the right hand and to the left, then we shall all see one another again. That we may then come to those who stand on the right hand, we will suffer this death, if it be the Lord God's will, patiently and willingly. There it will then be made manifest what each one has believed and what we believe; whether we are in the right or in the wrong will then come to the bright day. Therefore let each one look well to what he has to do, and hold fast to God and His Word alone, and those who do so, with them we shall all see one another again and find one another again in the Lord." Then both besought the Lord for forgiveness of their sins.

After the prayer Peter pronounced to his friend the forgiveness of his sins in the blood of Jesus Christ, and asked him: Believest thou that this blood will cleanse thee from all sins? Yes, answered Adolph, that is my comfort.— Now, then forgive me also, said Peter, everything that I may have done to thee in the time that we lay together. Adolph: Yes, gladly do I do that, and do thou also forgive me, if I have perhaps angered thee.

As Peter was led to the stake, Clarenbach called to him: Brother, be strong in the Lord, and trust in Him, for today we come to our Brother Christ and shall live with Him in eternity. Therefore be steadfast in faith and let not the fire terrify thee. I also will trust in the Lord, and His Word shall be my seal.

Last of all Adolph received yet a sweet comfort. One of the Beghards accompanying him assailed him with harsh abusive words, whereupon an Augustinian monk addressed him with these words: "Dear Adolph, I have not yet spoken to you, so hear then what the Lord says, John, chapter 11: I am the resurrection and the life. He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live, and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die." Adolph: "Dear brother, say that to me once more." The monk repeated the word, and Clarenbach replied: "Thanks have ye, that ye have proclaimed to me the Gospel of Christ, and greet all the brethren in the Lord Christ." Then he undressed himself, lifted his eyes toward heaven and sighed: "O Lord, for this I have longed, for so it must be, that we be proved through the cross." Meanwhile the executioner kindled the fire, and when it already blazed high, Adolph cried with a clear voice: "O Lord, into Thy hands I commend my spirit," and was now suffocated by the smoke.

Testimony against Priestly Domination.

So writes the holy Bernard of Clairvaux to the Pope: "What the Apostle (Peter) had, that he gave, the care, as was said, over the congregations. Perhaps dominion? Hear him himself! 'Not as lords over the people,' he says, 'but be ensamples to the flock!' And lest thou think it is spoken only of a humble disposition, not also of actual deed, the voice of the LORD sounds in the Gospel: 'The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and they that exercise authority upon them are called gracious lords: but ye shall not be so.' The matter is clear, to the apostles dominion is forbidden. Go thou, then, and usurp either, as a ruler, the apostolic office, or, as a bearer of the apostolic office, dominion. One of the two is always forbidden thee by the other. If thou wilt have both at once, thou wilt destroy both." (De consideratione ad Eugenium lib. II. c. 6.)

The Wounds of Christ.

The dying Conrad Rieger said: "The wounds of Christ are the lattices through which the heavenly Father looks out to us and we look in again to Him."

A Preacher Who Pleases Everyone.

When Luther once traveled through a place, he received, in answer to his inquiry what sort of preacher they had, the reply from all the people of the place that they had a stately, worthy preacher. Thereupon Luther answered: "I do not like to hear that; for your preacher surely does not strike the devil rightly on the cap, nor rightly assail his kingdom, else he would surely spit fire against him."
