Excerpted Tabular Survey

of some manifest errors of Pastor Grabau, set forth in his own words and compared with the false Romish doctrine as well as with the pure Lutheran doctrine.

Doctrines of Pastor Grabau.

V.

Of the Relation of the Preaching Office to the Church and to the Spiritual Priesthood of Believers.

32. "The holy preaching office is not given or conferred by the congregation, but by the Son of God, together with the Father and the Holy Ghost." (Hirtenbr. Antikritik p. 39.) "Here they again assert that the congregation has a right from God to confer the office upon its preacher. . . Accordingly the members of the church are made a second efficient cause, for whoever confers the office, effects it. But we know that the members of the church, insofar as they call fit persons in divine order, do not confer and effect the office, but that God, through the order in which they remain, Himself gives and appoints faithful servants of the church, confers and effects the office. Thus God is and remains in general, and also in the election and ordination, causa efficiens, or the one efficient cause of the office." (2. Synodal-Brief. p. 107.)

Doctrines of the Romish Church.

V.

Of the Relation of the Preaching Office to the Church and to the Spiritual Priesthood of Believers.

32. In the bull of condemnation which Pope Pius VI issued against several propositions of the Bishop of Pistoja, Scipio de Ricci, and against the synod of Pistoja summoned together by him, in the year 1794, it says under the heading: "Of the power attributed to the community of the church, that it may be communicated by this (the church) to the pastors," as follows: "The proposition which determines that the power of the church is given by God in order that it might be communicated to the pastors, who are her servants for the salvation of souls — understood in such a way that the power of the church-office and church-government is derived from the community of believers and so passes over to the pastors: is condemned and rejected as heretical." (Conc. Trid. ed. Smets. p. 285.)

Doctrine of the Lutheran Church, which Pastor Grabau calls the Missourian.

V.

Of the Relation of the Preaching Office to the Church and to the Spiritual Priesthood of Believers.

32. Balduinus: "The church is Christ's bride, John 3, 24., and consort, Ps. 45, 10., and the mistress of the house in his house, Ps. 68, 13.; as therefore the keys are given by the master of the house to the mistress of the house, so also Christ, the Lord of his house, which is the church, has given the keys to his bride, who confers the same upon her servants, who are called stewards or administrators of the mysteries of God." (De casibus conscientiae p. 1104.) — Pol. Leyser: "As the public church office in the ordinary way belongs only to those persons lawfully called thereto by the church, who in the name of God and of the church have the power to loose and to bind their hearers, so in case of necessity this power falls back upon the first Christian at hand; for as the power to loose and to bind was promised to Peter, Matth. 16, 19., and conferred upon all Apostles, John 20, 23., so this power, Matth. 18, 18., was given by Christ to the church, which can in the ordinary way confer the same upon persons lawfully called thereto." (Fortsetzung der ev. Harmonie von Chemnitz fol. 1748.) — Quenstedt: "The original effecting cause of the church office is the one and only God. . The less original cause, constituting the church office, is the whole church." (Theol. did.-pol. fol. 1497.)
