The Atheist.
When an atheist (denier of God) had for a considerable time vainly aired his principles in a numerous company of ladies, he finally, in order to compensate himself at least somewhat for his lost trouble, made the remark, witty and satirical as he supposed: "Pardon my error, ladies; I certainly did not suppose that in a house where intellect vies with the sense for the beautiful, I should alone have the honor of not believing in a God." "You are by no means alone," replied the lady of the house; "my horse, my dog, my cat share this honor with you; only this poor beast is too good-natured to boast of it."
Christian Liberty.
Beloved, do not consider it a small matter to forbid what God does not forbid, to break Christian liberty, which cost Christ's blood, and to burden the consciences with sins where there is none. He who does this and is permitted to do it, is permitted also to do all evil; yea, he thereby already denies all that God is, teaches and does, together with his Christ.
Luther.
Wicked Kings.
The Greek historian Cedrenus relates that when the godless Emperor Phocas had come to the rule at Constantinople, a certain monk quarreled on that account in his heart with God. He thought to himself: How could God give Christians so shameful a man for their lord! But as this was passing in his heart, he suddenly heard a voice calling to him: "No worse could be found. The sins of the inhabitants of Constantinople have deserved it so."
Custom, Tradition.
Our LORD JESUS Christ has said in the Gospel: "I am the Truth," John 14:6, and not: I am the Custom; therefore custom must yield to truth.— Augustine in the book on infant baptism.
Church News.
Honored Mr. President!
Since Pastor H. Bauer had to leave his former congregation for the sake of the confession, and had received a regular call from the St. Paul's congregation and its adherents of the Unaltered Augsburg Confession near Rome, Perry County, Ind., my former filial, he was, by the direction of the Vice-President, Dr. W. Sihler, installed into his new office on the eighth of June last.
May our Lord Jesus Christ grant him in his pastoral service much wisdom, courage and perseverance, and give to His Word one victory after another, that His blessed name may be glorified in many souls.
Wishing this, I sign with perfect esteem,
Fr. Eppling.
